Dr. Libby Heaney

Independent Artist

Libby Heaney is a visual artist with a PhD in quantum physics. Her moving image works, performances, and participatory experiments explore the implications of emerging technologies such as quantum computing and machine learning.

After eight years as a researcher at institutions such as the University of Oxford and the National University of Singapore, Heaney became disillusioned with the lack of critical discourse in her field and retrained as an artist, not only to examine the power structures of technology from a broader perspective, but also to offer alternative, magical realities that subvert the dominant use of these tools.

Today, Heaney works with noise, the absurd, the surreal, and affect to create new expressions of collective identity and belonging to each other and the world-a shape-shifting posthuman spirituality.

Heaney has exhibited widely in the UK and internationally, including at Tate Modern London, CCCB Barcelona, and Ars Electronic Linz. She is currently a resident at the prestigious London institution Somerset House, where she is working on a major commission for the Light Art Space in Berlin, using quantum computers.
